Sea Explorer REETHI BEACH Island
The Golden Sea of Baa-Atoll
Like the heading already indicates, the diving and snorkeling in this part of the Maldives is something special. The reefs, on which there hasn't been much diving activity, promise an unforgettable experience. The following is a brief explanation in which we describe our dive sites in greater detail.
The House Reef on the East Side
On the east side, there is a vast sand lagoon (Thundi) that is marked by many coral blocks. The main reef is mainly covered with hard corals and offers an optimum environment for lobster, crabs, shrimps, octopus and moray eels. Yet another specialty are the evening visits by sting rays and guitar sharks which come right up to the shore.
The House Reef on the West Side
The house reef on the west side of Reethi Beach lies on a channel and stretches out along the whole length of the island. Due to its diversity and wealth of fish life, the house reef of Reethi Beach is surely one of the most beautiful of the Maldives. The regular passing of dolphins, eagle rays and barracudas as well as the shoals of batfish, mackerels and fusiliers are just some of the highlights. During the north-east monsoon (May to October) visits from manta rays and whale sharks are not a rarity. Four buoys marking the entries and exits were set, especially for divers and snorkelers, to be used during both high and low tide for their own safety. The dive school also offers a “ tank delivery service ” to make your house reef dives more convenient.
Boat Dives [ 4 Basic Categories ]
A lot of our dive spots can be reached within 20 minutes. The dive spot away, approx. lies 1 hour by boat from Fonimagoodhoo. At the moment we dive at about 30 different spots, which we divide in 4 basic categories:
01 . Thilas
A third of our dive spots are found at shallow reefs (Thilas), that lie from between 3m – 23m below the surface. Some of these reefs are split by canyons and are populated – even in Maldivian – by an incredible diversity of life. The bottom is covered by both reef forming and soft corals. The overhangs and canyons are populated with sea fans and black corals. At many of these reefs there is a large possibility of (bumping) into sharks, barracudas, large groupers and napoleon wrasses, in the second part of the year coming across manta rays is not unlikely.
02 . Outer Reef
Most of the outer reef of the north-eastern part of the Baa atoll slopes down gently where one can often come across large turtles and eagle rays. Those parts of the reef where this is not the case – where alot of our dive sites are located – one can find the rare pink-fire coral, fantastic soft coral formations as well as napoleon wrasse, huge schools of fusiliers and there is always that possibility of spotting larger fish in the blue.
03 . Island Reef
House reefs of neighboring islands, which are mostly uninhabited make up a part of our dive spot selection. These spots are enjoyed due to their overhangs, swim troughs and caves. Soft corals in yellow, blue, pink cover large areas of these dive sites. Guitar sharks, stingrays, lionfish, moray-eels, sharks and huge schools of fish of variety accompany the divers on these excursions. Many island reefs have a further stretch of reef extending into the open ocean, making it a heaven for all types of fish.
04 . Atoll Reefs
Atoll reefs are larger and sometimes smaller coral reefs of the inner-atoll. Here, one can also dive along overhangs and canyons with fabulous coral growth of varying colors. In reef bays, the possibility of encountering whole schools of juvenile reef sharks, accompanied by their mothers is likely. These often show their territory with schools of snappers and fusiliers, as well as eagle rays and barracudas.
